PUBLICATION: “DEKYI” — story of an endangered generation threatened by policy of eradication
We are deeply honoured to unveil DEKYI, the first-ever illustrated children’s storybook on the colonial-style boarding schools inside Tibet. More than just a book, DEKYI is a voice for the voiceless — a tender yet powerful story of an endangered generation whose lives, language, and culture are threatened by policies designed to erase them.
Through the innocent eyes of a child, DEKYI brings to life the lived reality of over 900,000 Tibetan children who have been placed in such schools. It speaks of separation — from families, from the warmth of home, from the songs and stories that shape identity. It is a story of resilience, but also a reminder of the urgent need to protect what is precious and irreplaceable.
We believe that stories are one of the most powerful tools for education. This book is our effort to help young readers everywhere understand the challenges faced by Tibetan children, while also fostering empathy, awareness, and a sense of shared humanity.
This project could not have come to life without the unwavering support of our friends and partners. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Swedish Tibetan Society for School and Culture for making this work possible through their steadfast belief in our mission. Our sincere thanks to Buddha Kyab, whose storytelling captures both the innocence and strength of a child’s spirit; to Tendhar, whose illustrations bring every page to life with depth and emotion; and to Dr. Lama Jabb, for translating the story with great care and fidelity. We also thank Australia Coordinator Migmar Dekyi for her involvement in this journey, and Also International for the beautiful printing work that now allows DEKYI to reach hands and hearts across the world.
To all our program partners, collaborators, and friends who continue to believe in the work we do — thank you. Your trust is what enables us to tell stories that matter, and to keep alive the hope for a future where every Tibetan child grows up free to learn, speak, and dream in their own language, within the embrace of their culture.
DEKYI is more than a book — it is a testament, a warning, and a promise.
